I was talking to someone the other day about mediocrity. The word it self doesn’t even sound good when you say it does it? We were watching a giant fish tank in a public aquarium, in which hundreds of fish were all swimming in the exact same pattern. I commented that it was cool that there were only one or two fish BOLD ENOUGH to break away and swim the other way! Who says you have to go the way everyone else is going? Who made up that rule?
I remember when I was a child having wonderful talks with my grandma. She was a very unique old bird, a fisherman (woman), a painter, who wore pants when no woman would ever dream of it! She had cool art around her house, and carried a stone around in her pocket that had been polished by the rock tumbler in her hillside home backyard. The rocks were all different colors and shapes. She used to keep her hand in her pocket and hold the rock as her own personal “stress reducer”. Who knew what stress was in the 60′s and 70′s!!
Think for a minute about those wonderful rocks, being tumbled and refined for days…each one starting out rough and nothing special (kind of how we were when got started marketing) and after about two weeks you end up with brilliantly polished, colorful, unique rocks! The industry does the same to us, and hopefully we learn to use this uniqueness to our advantage, because it can be a downright winning strategy.
My grandmother was an original. I am sure everyone has somebody in their life they can think of right now that is colorful, unique, or quietly special. She used to tell me “Laura, always be YOU..don’t go with the crowd and do what the masses are doing, just because they are doing it. Be an ORIGINAL..have your own style. Make your own style. Make your impression on the world” That has always stuck with me.
My point is this as it relates to marketing, blogging, mlm and social media. Personal branding is an explosion on the internet!! The exciting opportunity we all have to create our personal brands, opens up a world of exciting expression that would have never otherwise been realized! The social media and attraction marketing platforms have changed the way networkers are approaching business, and will continue to for years to come. The product pitching continues, and there are fabulous companies that make them, to be sure.
So what I invite you to do is ask yourself “how can I be more original in my business?”. “What will make ME STAND AWAY FROM THE PACK?” “What is my Personal & Unique Strategy?” That is the question and the ANSWER.

Hi Laura ~ I appreciate how you incorporated using our individuality/uniqueness to standout in our online businesses. It is a challenge to continue to be unique in today’s world in that so much of us seem to want to be like everyone else. I don’t know about you, yet being truly myself/who I am is the only thing that has really ever made me happy. Like everyone else out there in the world, I have gifts to share that are unique to me, and how can I really do that if I’m trying to be someone else? This is an awesome post Laura and I’m glad you shared it
Christine
I have been on this Kangen Water and I feel good and I have energy that I never had before. I am always happy and I am living without my prescriptions for depression and I am losing the weight I have always to get rid of this excess weight and I am more of a positive attitude and I am able to even clean my house don’t get tired as easy. My back pain is gone along with my knee pain.
Hello Laura and Larry!
What a lovely memory to have. Grandma sounds like an amazing woman. Hearing your story made me wonder. . . . Why is it that we get such a kick out of precocious little ones and we treasure unique, wise elders, but in the middle, we want everybody to be the same?
There were many times in my growing up that I wanted to be the same, to fit in. Much to my mother’s chagrin, that never happened. I could never really do it and always felt like the odd man out. It has taken a very long time, lots of work on myself, and oddly enough it has taken my affiliation with other Internet marketers to begin to appreciate being ME.
Maybe we entrepreneurial types are all a bunch of fishies swimming against the crowd, so I have finally found my people! LOL!
This is a very profound post and it has given me a great deal to think about. Thank you for sharing such a treasured memory.
Fondly,
Mentor Mama
I love your story about your grandmother. You are very lucky to have had such a wonderful role model in your life; I’m sure it served you well.
Each of us brings a unique perfection to the world, yet so many people try to blend in with the crowd. I think that most in our industry have been blessed with a yearning for personal development and spiritual awakening. As the result of our self discovery many of us have learned to embrace our individuality and let it shine.
It’s all about authenticity, and I for one feel blessed to have found myself in an industry which has forced me to get in touch with who I really am and to feel good about sharing the “real me” with the world.
Thank you Kathy for your comment. My grandmother was indeed a wonderful lady. This industry has afforded me and everyone I have touched (who have taken advantage of it) the opportunity to BECOME a much greater version of SELF, and it has been glorious to experience. There is no other business in the world that creates such a perfect environment for the greatness and authenticity as you say of individuals to emerge!!

Being yourself… being an original is no longer an option – it’s your job (in a positive sense, of course)! It’s going to be a great joy for me to see the influx of people who market the business of themselves and create a life of freedom and success!
I love this saying that coincides with what you’re saying here: Build the business of You, Inc. – there’s no competition!
Thank you Paul for your comment. I love what you say about no competition for You Inc!!! There is only ONE Paul Klaszus and he ROCKS!! I am learning alot from your syndicating and blogging, as this tribe concept rolls on. Being original and expressing ourselves in a unique way makes us magnetic!! I am excited about this concept and I agree with you that there truly is no other option!

Larry and Laura,
Dancing to one’s own drummer, absolutely! Discovering your passion and moving towards it is what you should focus on. Each person has a unique gift to share with the world. By following everyone else, you hold that gift in. It’s so important to be yourself, authentically.
Great post, got me thinking
Val
Absolutely agree with you Val!!I learned very early from my mom that you have gifts inside to give and could be robbing the world by holding them back. We are creative beings, and were made to express. That’s why personal branding is such a great concept!!
Thanks
Laura & Larry
That is something we all need to think about and do a self examination on. I have always been someone who is a bit of a rebel. If everyone else is doing something, I often want to go the other direction. Being different is important to me in a lot of areas in my life.
Hey Melodie,
Let’s hear it for the rebels!! I am always the activist, the one who is making the waves! I drive everyone crazy. This world needs a little shaking up by people like us. That’s exactly what our message is all about. All the fish are swimming in the same direction! It’s so cool that we are of those that broke away and dared to swim the other way…I love it.
I am excited to know you
Laura
Good talking to you today Laura. “Are you an Original” I have two thoughts here. And by the way aren’t you so lucky to have a Grandmother with such wisdom. The thoughts are not mine but garnered over the years. The First: “We all are born Unique, but most will die Copies” And the Second: Mediocrity: “Is the Worst of the Best and the Best of the Worst. sorta like the Cream of the Crap.” Blog away my lady your on to something.
Hi Nelson
I really enjoyed our conversation the other day as well. You are most definitely an ORIGINAL with your blog title “Dirtnaponhold” That’s what I call “outside the box!! You are going to be a fun person to know and work with. TRUE Originality that really stands out, is sometimes a little hard to come by, and you have a lot to teach us. You are very modest, and that’s fine. Just take a bow privately.
Thanks you for your creativity and great writing!!
Laura & Larry
The idea of being original is very scary. You have to deal with a lot of comments to be original.
But the rewards of plowing through the BS are undeniable. I am not a marketer but I am a salesman so Marketing/Personal Branding is my life. I live the motto “Make an Impression, Let them decide”
People who like you will want to business with you. The others you Shouldn’t want to business with.
Great Article.

One must always be true to themselves if they want a successful life.
Larry and Laura,
In spite of all the opportunity for personal branding, and yes it is very exciting, one thing I had to learn was that it’s really okay just to be me! I was busy following others – how they market, and finally realized I didn’t have to be like other people and market the way they do etc. It takes time to find yourself. For me, following others was a good starting point because I was able to find myself… we are all unique and how ever we figure it out is a wonderful part of it all… nice post!
Laura and ineLarry,
What a thought provoking and insightful post. So important to be true to yourself. One thing I am learning to do is to be more open about what I am thinking and feeling. As I share openly on other people’s blogs and pages, as they comments and I thoughtfully respond, and as I watch and learn from so many online entrepeneurs, I feel less and less threatened, less and less afraid of the “competition” or the need to speed my way into the market. I am learning to take my time, write what I truly feel, and allow my own self-discovery, from internal and external messages, to help me brand myself
