have been pondering something over the past month or so that’s puzzling me. There seem to be two ways to look at this issue, and both are valid, so you can decide where you come down on it. I think it is a runaway mentality that permeates our down lines, companies, and even our industry itself.
What I am referring to is the the use of the term “Signing Up”. What kinds of things do you typically “Sign Up” for? I know I Sign Up for sweepstakes offers, discounts on hotels, coupon offers, two-for ones, volunteer jobs (I LOVE to volunteer for stuff) so you get the idea. Maybe you think of huge opportunities, and this term has a different meaning for you. What I am getting at is that it’s a term that can get used a little too casually at times.
Do you “Sign Up” for a serious business? I know I didn’t… I HAVE signed up for internet deals and countless affiliate programs. That is not to say that some internet deals or affiliate programs have not been income generating or serious business to offend anyone, because some have. As far as the intent for full time income, I did my due diligence and made a decision, then enrolled as an associate, and purchased my initial product order. The vast majority of our industry is part-time, but what is the initial intent? My mind has been pondering..
Some people on the other hand DO SIGN UP, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. That’s how we get our groups filled up with lots of MOMENTUM….as long as business volume is coming along with those sign ups and they are not (from here on out a SPOT is non-product order) “SPOTS”! Do you see the distinction?
Have you ever heard… “I have all these people who I have “SIGNED UP” and none of them are doing a darned thing!!”…. or you might even have said this yourself! What I would say to that is..if you signed up a bunch of people, that’s about all you have, is a bunch of signed up people. Meaning, what in the world do these people OWE YOU anyway? You are there to serve them as their sponsor or leader.
So what would be the correct approach? When you have a new person to work with as a prospect for your opportunity or product, spend some time figuring out what their needs are. Are they signing up simply to “get in” on emotion ahead of everyone else? Many times people fill their downlines with a slew of SPOTS in the hopes that these people are going to magically wake up one day and go to work. This is a slippery slope!
On the one hand you want to see the people you care about not miss out..but if they are not buying product you end up with a hollow leg, and a whole lot of nothing!
There is a Right way to go about it, with product orders, education, to still have the same fire and momentum. Here’s the Right Way:
- Connect with any of those people on your team to help them get started
- Plug them in to you team system and email list
- Follow how people are doing on the product or service more than the first few days or weeks
- Take the time to get to know people really well up front, share your vision, find out their goals and dreams and work with them if they are your personally enrolled. If not possible, do whatever you can to make some type of connection.
The “Sign Up” Game is one that is probably here to stay, and is more likely called the NUMBERS GAME. You have to remember that although you may be enrolling numbers to get the 4 or 5 good people everyone is really looking for, it’s far better to enroll solid business builders and product users who are going to be there for the long haul, than someone who takes a “SPOT” in the beginning to wait and see what happens!
Occasionally , there are those cases when the seeds you plant bring harvest later. Meaning, there are people who see the opportunity but do not want to do anything with the business except stay on autoship, and allow some time to go by. Most likely, they’ve been getting your emails, facebook messages, tweets etc. Because they stayed on autoship, they have the gift of all the work you have been doing on their behalf. Then one day you get a phone call and they say “wow..I had no idea this was so on fire!..how much money can I make?” Then you go to work with that person and help them build their business! Those are the GOOD ones!! The point is that you built and maintained a RELATIONSHIP with the person, which is very different than a SPOT!!
So the next time you get your pen out to sign someone up, or meet someone on skype to walk them through the process, slow down, and take a breath. Share your heart with your prospect and make sure he or she is solid with a product order, and enrolled in autoship. They can get a SPOT at the dry cleaners!!
